Komi Hakam

Komi is a producer & doctor with a fascinating background. Born in Libya to parents who immigrated from Iraq during the war, he has lived most of his life in the cultural capital of the world – London. His eclectic music is inspired by his one-of-a-kind lifestyle and powerful personality.

Komi’s earliest exposure to music began with his mastery of multiple instruments. A talented pianist, he won local competitions and was appointed head of music at school. During this time, Komi’s music started gaining traction as he produced for local artists like Awate, leading to interviews on BBC Radio and KISS FM with DJ Semtex and DJ MK.

It is Komi’s ability to combine different genres into cohesive ear-catching songs that sets him apart from other producers. He immerses himself in everything from hiphop to underground EDM, antipop/hyperpop, neo-soul, big beat, and traditional African and Arabic percussion. He has received recognition from the likes of Hans Zimmer, Just Blaze, Boi-1da, Benny Blanco and Jason Evigan.

During his time studying medicine at King’s College London, Komi produced the song “La La La” by Sam Smith, which became one of his first successes in music. The hit soared to number 1 in over 30 countries and continues to amass billions of streams. Komi came up with the initial idea for the song in his bedroom – starting with the thumping garage drums and iconic “La La La” hook. This subsequently became one of the most recognisable melodies of the century, and inspired an era of production-driven hooks by other artists (eg. Diplo/Beibers “Where Are You Now”). In under 15 minutes, he and a close friend named Froby (Frobisher Mbabazi) constructed all the chords, principal instruments, and melodies that are heard on the track. This achievement earned him multiple accolades including a Grammy nomination (Producer – Album Of The Year) and BMI Award.

Komi aims to inspire others by demonstrating that it is possible to excel in multiple seemingly unrelated fields. In addition to his medical degree, he earned an intercalated degree in Philosophy, and has worked as a doctor in over eight hospitals (helping to fight the COVID pandemic from the frontlines). He believes in breaking all limitations and exploring unlimited potential in a world that often tries to confine people to specific categories. His aura is confident and passionate, and he acknowledges that God is the sole reason for his success.

Other artists he has collaborated with include Paloma Faith (‘Leave While I’m Not Looking’ & ‘Trouble With My Baby’), James Arthur (‘Is This Love’), Ella Henderson (‘Beautifully Unfinished’), Bakermat/Kiesza (‘Don’t Want You Back’), Julia Michaels, Kim Petras, Ceelo Green, Olly Murs (‘We Still Love’), Emeli Sande, Craig David, Lil Wayne, Sean Paul, The Script & JoJo. He was instrumental in developing the house group 99 Souls – who, with his guidance, achieved a top 5 single and VMA nomination for ’The Girl is Mine’.

Komi currently resides in London’s business district (Canary Wharf) and composes music from his penthouse overlooking the River Thames. Since 2023, he has been working on his own project as an artist. He has also collaborated with JL (Jerry Lang) to curate ideas for artists including Joey Badass, Fivio Foreign and Duke Dumont, and was recently spotted in the studio with Junior Andre (Columbia Records), J Fado (Island Records) and Afgan (Empire).
