Smiley: The Toronto Rapper Making Waves in the Rap Scene

If you haven’t heard of Smiley, it’s time to get familiar. The rising star rapper from Toronto has been making waves in the rap scene with his unique style and raw, unfiltered lyrics.

He has just dropped his latest single, “Nicky Nine Door,” along with a music video directed by King Bee Productions. The track, produced by Flarryse and Yxngtee and mixed by Devin Nakao, features a nostalgic reference to the childhood game of ringing doorbells and running away. However, the real surprise is the unexpected cameo appearance of label boss Drake about a minute into the video. Drake touches Smiley’s shoulder before exiting the scene and letting the party continue.

Born Alexandre Eli Morand in 1997, Smiley first discovered his love for rap music in 2014 when he joined the Garden Gang, a group of rappers and artists from his neighbourhood.

Since then, Smiley has come a long way. He released his first track, “9 on Me,” in 2015, which caught the attention of renowned record producer Boi-1da. His follow-up track, “Garden Girl,” also garnered attention and helped him gain traction in the rap scene. But it wasn’t until he caught the attention of fellow Canadian rapper Drake that Smiley’s career took a significant turn.

Drake followed Smiley on Instagram and began supporting his music, which led to the two rappers communicating and eventually collaborating. Smiley released his debut project, “Buy. of. Bye.,” in 2018, and it received critical acclaim. The same year, Drake cited Smiley’s lyrics during his first public statement following the release of the diss track “The Story of Adidon” by American rapper Pusha T.

It was in 2021 that he truly made his mark on the rap scene with the release of “Over the Top,” a collaboration with Drake that peaked at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. Produced by American record producer Tay Keith, the song showcased Smiley’s unique vocal delivery and ability to captivate listeners with his raw, unfiltered lyrics.

In November 2021, Smiley released “Buy or Bye 2,” the sequel to his 2018 project, featuring appearances from Yung Bleu, Duvy, Drake, Pressa, and OhGeesy. The album showcased Smiley’s versatility as a rapper and solidified his place in the rap scene.

Smiley’s success is a testament to his talent and the support he has received from fellow artists like Drake. He may be young, but he’s already making a name for himself in the rap scene with his unique style and raw, unfiltered lyrics. With his rising fame, Smiley is poised to become one of the biggest names in rap music in the coming years.
